PHOTOGRAPHY & DENTISTRY IN A NUTSHELL

Course Overview Over the past ten to fifteen years, the advent and maturation of digital photography and its associated workflows has been widely adopted in dentistry. Digital photography provides clinicians with a unique and powerful tool that can rapidly aid in diagnosis and treatment planning, enhance patient and interdisciplinary communication, serve as a medico-legal record, and facilitate documentation for educational or promotional uses. In order to maximize the benefits that digital photography can bring to one’s practice, it is incumbent on the clinician to become proficient and comfortable with operating digital photographic equipment. This didactic course is aimed at providing a general overview of digital photography and its applications within dentistry for both surgical and restorative applications, as well as providing relevant information to familiarize the participants with different patient photographic setups, retraction methods, and methods for troubleshooting challenging clinical photographic scenarios. Objectives Understand the essential principles of digital photography. Review contemporary equipment options, and the applications for these tools in daily practice workflows. Discuss protocols for leveraging surgical and restorative digital documentation to facilitate improved interdisciplinary and patient communication, serve as a medico-legal record of treatment, and promotion of one’s clinical achievements for educational, research or practice management purposes.  Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz is a tenured Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He completed his DDS and PhD training programs in his hometown at the University of Granada, Spain, before moving to Ann Arbor (Michigan, USA) to attain a MS degree and a Certificate in Periodontics. Dr. Avila-Ortiz currently serves as department chair (DEO) and graduate program director. He also oversees the international visiting scholar program in Periodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and currently maintains a faculty practice limited to Periodontics and Oral Implantology. Dr. Avila-Ortiz’s research spans a number of clinical topics, including the understanding of the influence of local and systemic individual patient factors on healing dynamics following periodontal therapy, as well as bone and soft tissue grafting, particularly in relation to therapeutic strategies for implant site development. He is also interested in practical, but also high-quality photo and video documentation of clinical cases for diagnostic, didactic, practice promotion, research and medico-legal purposes.
